Bikaner is famous for its Old Havelis. Bikaner was founded in 1486 by Bika, one of the fourteen sons of Rao Jodha. Bikaner - lying in the north of the desert state, bikaner is dotted with many sand dunes. More popularly called the camel country , Bikaner is renowned for the best riding camels in the world. The exotic camel safaris, its gorgeous forts and the worship of thousands of holy rats at Karni Mata temple are some of the most interesting aspects of Bikaner. The camel festival at Bikaner held in the month of January is also an event worth witnessing if one wants to get the actual color of the place.

Top Tourist Attractions in Bikaner

Junagarh Fort – The sixth monarch of Bikaner, Raja Rai Singh, constructed this citadel. Raja Rai Singh’s rule continued from 1571 to 1612. Akbar, the Mughal emperor, gifted land to him in Burhanpur (present Madhya Pradesh) and Gujarat as recognition for his contribution as an army chief. He captured a section of the Marwar region as well. Rai Singh also received some finances from Jodhpur which made it easy for him to construct the citadel. He enjoyed a good status in the regal courtrooms of Akbar and Jahangir, his heir. Raja Rai Singh was an avid voyager and this is the reason why he grew interest in architecture and painting. His concepts have been significantly implemented into the pattern of design of the Junagarh Fort. It is one of the invincible forts of India and houses a museum which showcases the arms and jewelries of the foregone times.

Lalgarh Palace - Once the home of the raja-maharajas this palace is now a heritage hotel offering royal taste to tourists coming here. Its architecture is a perfect blend of Rajput, Mughal and European architectural styles. Its interiors are beautifully decorated giving a feeling that one has come to the era of raja-maharajas. There is also a museum in its complex where you can treat your eyes with a variety of royal belongings.

Camel Breeding Farm - It is another famous attraction of Bikaner where hundreds of camels are reared. This farm is engaged in research on camels. It is one of its kind institutes in India. It was founded by the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) in July 1984.

Gajner Palace - Few km from Bikaner is the middle of Thar desert is a oasis called Gajner Palace. Just like most palaces in Bikaner, this one too was built by the Maharajah Ganga Singh. The palace served as a resort for the King and visiting British officials.

Deshnok Temple – The famous 600 yrs old temple on the Jodhpur road about 30 kms from the city dedicated to karni Mata. an incarnation of Goddess Durga. She blessed Rao Bika, the founder of Bikaner in establishing his kingdom and since then she was also worshiped as the tutelary deity of the erstwhile Bikaner dynasty. The temple is unique as the rats called Kabas, are venerated here and the shrine is a sanctuary for them. It is believed that these Kabas carry souls of future Charans/bards (children of the goddess) who inhabit the town of Deshnok. These Kabas are held sacred and they move freely in the temple precincts. It is considered highly auspicious. It is considered highly auspicious to sight a white Kaba. The temple has fascinating huge silver gates and marble carvings that were donated by Maharaja Ganga Singhji The most attractive feature of temple are the rodents who scamper freely within the premises and if one touches your feet its considered auspicious. They are regarded sacred and devotees buy prasad (feeding) to offer to them.

Desert Safari – Bikaner offers several desert camel safari tours to the tourists. Travel through the great Indian Thar Desert. During the journey, you will come across several small villages and tribes with their own traditions and beliefs. Desert Safari between Jaisalmer and Bikaner are very popular.

Camel Festival – Camel Festival is much like Elephant Festival of Jaipur. Dedicated to the ship of the desert or the main mode of the transport for the desert people, it is held on the full moon night, every year in January. A lot of events featuring camel races and camel dances are held. You can enjoy camel rides and experience the buoyancy and colorful environment typical to Rajasthan.
